from Philippines newspaper reports:
http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=29722Pacquiao’s fee: $ 5M
By NICK GIONGCO
Top Rank big boss Bob Arum revealed yesterday that Manny Pacquiao will earn much more than what Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera were paid in the Filipino’s April 14 clash with undefeated knockout artist Jorge Solis of Mexico in San Antonio, Texas.
"Check with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and you’ll see that one fighter was paid $ 1.5 million and the other got $ 1.25 million," Arum said in a long-distance call from Los Angeles.
"Manny will earn much more than what these two fighters got combined," said Arum shortly after arriving from Las Vegas. "Manny will get close to $ 5 million against Solis."
So Manny is getting paid more to fight Jorge Solis, a nobody who has never fought anybody, than Barrera and JMMarquez got to fight each other *combined*?! That will really piss off Marco when he finds out, after all its not like Manny is a proven ppv draw. Arum is vastly overpaying Manny for the Solis fight, as a way to get him to walk away from Golden Boy. No wonder Manny screwed Oscar. I mean he's getting more to fight Jorge Solis in Texas than he did to rematch Erik Morales!

Yea, I saw that this morning too.
Another interesting article I saw was that Arum sold the Filipino TV rights to the broadcast for $800K.
Did anyone ever hear any figures as to how well the Pac-Larios PPV did?
And Arum is expecting a "sellout" of 20,000 for the fight as well with over 10,000 tix already sold.

I'm sure that's creative accounting. Arum is probably pocketing 30-50% of Manny's purse for whatever it is that Arum does.
So if it's 33%, then Arum would still be paying him a nice chunk of change, but would need only about 100-150K buys to cover Manny's share of the purse, which would be about $3 million. Then Arum jsimply doesn't take his share -- and probably writes it all off as a loss, offsetting his tax liability in any successful ventures / PPV later in the year.
That's if Arum is on the up and up. For all we know the signing bonus was contingent on the first fight and so he's including it, or Arum is taking 50% as a manager's fee.
Finally, if Manny had fought Barrera it probably would have been on PPV and Manny could well have made even more. Who knows?
I hardly trust Oscar or Arum to give me anything but propoganda in these matters.

i smell boewlshiat. arum is probably factoring in the signing bonus he gave pac plus other ppv upside yet to be realized. btw, this card doesnt deserve to be on ppv and i predict it will tank. if it doesnt and actually does well, say 250 to 300, then pac is a major playa and cannot be ignored by gbp fighters.

Marco did not make 1.5 and JMM 1.25
thats straight bullshit and we got it from the sources themselves

I think it's B.S, I don't believe it. If people buy the PPV, it won't be just because of Pacquiao. Arce and Chavez Jr. will have something to do with it. I know that if it was just Pacquiao vs Solis I wouldn't buy it. I want to see Arce's fight so I have interest and even then I won't buy the PPV. You can't say the Pacquiao is a major player on PPV until HE sells the fight by himself.

Well PBF got 4-5 mil to fight Brusseles so anything is possible.

Keep in mind that because of the golden boy lawsuit, HBO is not doing this ppv. Top rank is producing this ppv in house. In the past, when a promotion has done a ppv in-house, with its own announcers and without HBO production and promotion, it has dramatically affected buy rates. There is no way Arum will make money on this show if he's paying Manny $5 million. Steve Wynn must be ready to pay him so much to get Manny fighting at his new casino in Macau that he is willing to lose money on the Solis fight just to velvet handcuff Manny to a deal.

If he's getting that much loot I can understand him signing, but GBP would have gave him good money and the Manny we all knew and loved, was a guy who just fought the harderst possible fights, so essentially he's only with Top Rank for the money, no?
Barrera made $3m and Marquez $1.5 BTW...

I was told that MAB was guaranteed 3 mill, and JMM, 1.5 million
Oftentimes, those commission reports are very misleading and inaccurate

Murad Muhammed fucked Pacquiao
Gary Shaw fucked Pacquiao while pacquiao was sitting on his lap
Pacquiao is at least getting paid by Arum some serious money that he truly deserves. I know Arum aint a saint but I give him props to get his guys in his stable some bread.
Oh yea Barrera and JMM got 1.5 each that fucking bowlshit.... Fuck GBP

Arum is so nice. I am sure he will be happy losing money on crappy PPVs. As long as his good buddy Pac that he really cares about gets paid. Arum isn't in this for the money. He loves Pacquiao.
I hope Arce and Mijares get paid, because if I order this shitty PPV it will be for their fight.

Arum is probably overpaying Manny for this fight to entice to stay with him even more. He's probably like "see, had you been with GB, you wouldn't be getting 5 mil for a fight".
JMM got 1.5 and MAB 3. Not bad IMO and I think 5 mil for fighting an unknown on PPV is VERY generous.

Arum is a crook and a liar and I wouldn't believe too much in what he says. I see it very difficult to pay manny 5 mil when they are making only about 1 mill total on the gate. They're only making about 4 mil per 100K of PPV buys which the distributer makes a cut. I don't see a PPV fight with Pac vs. a nobody doing that well.
Creative accounting by Arum?

and the international tv money, and how about if it sells 250,000 homes? allegedly pacquaio is the second biggest draw in boxing. then you have arce on there, one of the top three most popular mexicans.

Overpaid is such an overused term in sports. Athletes are worth what someone is willing to pay them. If the Yankees think ARod is worth 20 million a year then that's what he's worth. If Arum thinks Pac is worth 5 million for a fight against Solis that's his worth.

It's pretty simple if Pac-Solis gets more buys than MAB-JMM and they are all because of Pac and not Arce then he deserves the money.
I get the feeling that Arce is subsidizing TR's Pacquaio deal on this though. Arce got big ratings on his HBO BAD card this year.

chiit, thats a lot of money meng, considering arum didnt even make a $50k purse bid on 1 of his former fighters mandatories, a guy in the name of juan manuel marquez i believe.

I disagree. In this type of auction setting, winning bidders often systematically overpay for assets that have an uncertain future value. The intuition is straightforward -- suppose you have a group of 30 people who all have beliefs about the future value of something. On average, experts can correctly assess correctly the value of certain asset, but the auction doesn't go to the "average" value, but to the winning value.
The classic case is oil drilling rights, but you can also observe things like publishing houses overpaying hot authors for rights to their next novel. These are a little easier to "prove" than the sports case because the true value is ultimately revealed -- the amount of the oil in the ground or the total sales of the given book.
It's called the "winner's curse," and is actually a neat little anomoly. Because bidders realize this, they will generaly reduce their bid, so as a result
1. the average bid is lower than the true value, and
2. the winning bid is higher than the true value
That's why sports owners often have to collude to keep themselves from "overspending" and it's why a lot of athletes could be "overpaid"
