looks like HBO will do a small 4 man tourney at 140 with Khan, Maidana, Alexander and Ortiz. Khan will be forced to fight Maidana by the WBA next anyways so its essentially just having Alexander-Ortiz and then the winners facing off. should give us a unified champion and make someone into a name.
Griffin
Interesting, Maidana would be a tough one for Khan, i like.

What about Bradley, Campbell, Holt, Urango, and Malignaggi? This should have been an 8 man tournament.

Bradley is with Showtime and im sure HBO would love the winner of this to fight Juan Diaz or Malinggagi. Not realistic to expect any more than this. Its just two fights for the winner of this so plenty of fights will open up after this, for the time being its pretty good.

Competition between the networks brings good things.

I thought Devon Alexander was fighting Campbell next. If that happens, I expect him to beat Nate. That's a horrible style matchup for Nate at this point in his career.

Urango, I'm not all that wild about, unless he's fighting a guy like Maidana who will just sit there and bang with him. Against anyone with halfway decent boxing skills, Urango's fights can deteriorate into lopsided clinics, where his opponent hits him, moves just a little and Urango does nothing but follow the opponent until the final bell.

Holt needs to matched correctly. Against Campbell, Malinaggi or Urango he'd be unwatchable. Bradley is always in good fights and his first scrap with Holt was entertaining enough. Maidana-Holt would be a good matchup. Alexander-Holt might be pretty good too. Not so sure about Ortiz Holt. On the one hand you've got two guys with some vulnerability in the chin department who can bang like hell. But both guys, for all their power are more natural counterpunchers. This could be great or it could be stinkier than hell.

I think this is a lame shortsighted response to answer Showtime's tourney.

I'd be shocked if Kahn does it. No way will he take less money to fight here than in the UK. If I remember prior to the Barrera fight they tried to get him on an undercard here and due to the money available they decided against it.

And the tournament has to include Bradley or at least the Bradley-Peterson winner.

I don't even see why they would call this a "tournament". Just make a few good fights and see how it plays out.

HBO has relationships with the big boys at 140/147: Mosley, Pac, Mayweather, Berto, PWill if he still can make 147, Hatton, Clottey, Cotto, Margacheato if he comes back, Kahn if they want. They could make a killer tournament at 140/147.

Or alternatively they could just go to 135 if they want a cheaper alternative:
JMM
Juan Diaz
Valero
Soto
Guerrero if he'll move up
Katsidis
Anthony Peterson
Maybe Funeka, Dimarco or Moses as lesser known candidates
Too bad Antillon and Linares just lost or they could have been good candidates

But, HBO needs to either GO BIG or go home. Triying to answer Showtime with these 4 guys at 140 will only make them look like a lame copycatter.

Khan is going to have to fight Maidana anways and im sure if he comes through that they probably wont mind putting him in with the winner of the other fight. Also im sure that at least one if not both of Khan's fights would be in the UK. The tournament isnt the same format as the super six and HBO tried to do this kind of thing with a few lightweights on a PPV in the last year and did it at 160 some time back. Can't really say its a response to Showtime as its just the winner of one fight fighting the winner of another fight that will be on the network.

A super six at 140 with all the best fighters there wouldnt work anyways. AA gets 8 million viewers and Kessler sells a massive amount of PPVs and sells tens of thousands of tickets, you have a unique situation there with all the different markets that makes it financially viable. Could do that at welter but thats the only other place it could happen and those partys arent the kind to take that much risk.

Here, HBO are just looking to line-up a unification fight with some young up and comers cant shit on that.

isnt alexander with don king? i think that might be a problem with putting this thing together. doesnt he always want options on the opponents?

Warren usually does the same but Don doesnt seem as bad lately. Perez and DeMarco beat his boys at the weekend and headed back to Gary Shaw. It probably would be more believable if it was Urango instead of Alexander though.

i would be down for another lightweight lightning type ppv with

JMM vs Katsidis
Valero vs DeMarco
add in Soto, Funeka, Peterson, and someone else who can bring some pain and match them 4 up vs each other

of course it's always better if you know it will lead to bigger and more meaningful fights a la Super 6.

Tournaments are always a plus in boxing, but doing it in a division which already has a clear champion (Pacquiao) and a clear number 1 contender (Timothy Bradley) without involving either of them sounds lame. One of the reasons I like the Super 6 is because it is a division with tons of talent and no clear numero uno. It offers clarity.

154 would be a good division to do a tourney in.
TrueWest
I like it. Its much shorter and will offer 3 good fights. The Super Six is special in the sense that its not 1 and your out and theres much more time invested. I think HBO wants a couple good fights and in turn gets a new champion to get behind (I'm sure they are rooting for either Ortiz or Khan to win it all)

8 names IMO would've been too much and too complicated. 6 wouldn't work in a 1 loss elimination tournament.

I'd love to see a Maidana-Ortiz rematch.

co sign.

Khan-Maidana is a great matchup of young fighters. Alexander -Ortiz, the same. Whats to complain about?

An incredible 8 man tournament at 140 w/ all the top fighters would make me cream my pants, but its not realistic and we shouldnt be waiting around for it.

Yesssssss!!!!!!! I can not wait to see Khan streched out!!!!! War Maidana and Victor Ortiz........
MRX1983
Nice hope this comes off, I think Khan and Ortiz move on to face each other. Should be 3 interesting fights
