Full Version: Robinson v PBF

Battle of technicians. I'm pretty sure PBF would utilise his defensive skills to its full extent. Just hope that there would be some fight. What could Robinson have done differently to anybody that have actually faced Pretty Boy in the ring so far?
The Sly Fox
I guess you rate Mayweather a lot more highly than I do.

I'm not one of his, "haters" but he would never take this fight. That's my honest take.
RayTheBest
I might be overestimating PBF, but I believe he would give anyone in the history of boxing around 135-147 a difficult time. If he decides to run around and potshot, it would be extremely difficult to land meaningful shots on him. I don't really like the guy that much, but I must admit that kind of style is just awkward.
The Sly Fox
He has had a great career, but at 147 (the only place a fight with Robinson could occur), he has avoided too many serious challenges to be considered a great of the division.

A great, great fighter, whose courage (at least, in the latter stages of his career) doesn't match his talent. He'd never take the fight, Ray.

He'd never take the fight, Ray.

That might just be the truth.
The Sly Fox
However, he does love his limelight. My guess is he'd try to find other worthwhile, big-money opponents he could face, possibly in another weightclass.

Ivan Robinson wouldn't stand a chance. Stupid thread.

Thank you very much, Mr. Genius.

floyd would start saying "he got 19 losses.....im 40-0..." anyways ray would wipe his ass with money....
DangerDong
Floyd is a tough night out for anyone. Robinson supposedly had one shot power at 147 though and would be like facing a supercharged supermiddle Roy Jones. It just doesnt seem feasible.

Imagine if Tito had went from 147 on up and stayed basically unbeaten until he was 125 fights into his career. Absurd. Hard to hold anyone to Rays standard.
The Sly Fox
Hard, but not impossible. There are others. Mayweather just isn't one of them.

War that man. Hes either headed for disaster or trying to recapture a glimmer of greatness. A glimmer i tell you.

Also, i am drunk right now.
The Sly Fox
I do think he's joined that (sadly) long, long list of fellows who don't know when to hang 'em up. There're much sadder stories than Jones' of course --- his is merely one of delusion. It's a shame. He should let it go.

I hate you guys so much.

Alright, just Ray then. P4P people can keep to whatever opinions make them happy, but putting PBF in the ring with Sugar Ray Robinson...

Floyd has the same chance of beating Robinson at welter that I do. he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. He doesn't deserve to have heard the name Robinson used in a sentence. He doesn't deserve to know what a sentence is.
The Sly Fox
Strangely, this is said to be at 140, though. That's a bit of a wildcard...

Robinson.

If the fight took place today, Robinson would make 140 but come in the ring at about 155-160.

If it took place way back in the day, Floyd would be filled out at 140.

Either way, it's not very often where I have Floyd not only getting handled in a MM, but knocked out to top it off. This would be such an occasion.
Sugar
Let's just say that Ray wouldn't forget his jab.

I hate to say this, because I'm not usually one of those "omg so-and-so hurt him so THIS guy would destroy him, mmmks!!!!1", but if guys like Corley and Sosa can shake Floyd up at 140 and 135 respectively, I gotta believe Robinson could and would hurt him, and then finish him.

Yes, Floyd has gotten better since then, and yes his defense is great. But don't discount Ray's handspeed, footwork, one-punch power and skills.

Bottom line is Ray was just all-around better.

Lord Nefarious
Ray has power and speed but he's not on Mayweather's level defensively. And the Sosa fight? It was an unremarkable fight but Sosa never got past Floyd's defense.

I stand corrected. For some reason I was thinking about Cotto getting rocked by Sosa.

You can take that out of the equation and the point still stands though.

I think speed will eventually prove to be Floyd's kryptonite. Robinson was kinda fast and long.

Honestly prod, I think the quickness and ability to stay accurate from a couple of different ranges may even be secondary to Robinson's punching power in this matchup. If it comes down to a one-shot game, which it generally does with two guys who are very quick and intelligent, Robinson has the advantage. He one-shotted a couple of guys who had serious chins even at middle and slightly above.

Past that, he also had the skills to more than hang with Floyd and poke holes in his defense.

I'd pick Robinson. But I'm not sure when he would have been able to make 140. He fought at 135 in the amateurs when he was like 15-16. I think Floyd might have a chance at 140 if Robinson struggled making weight but just think there are guys he can't beat. Robinson was one of those guys. He'd never avoid everything,

Robinson was fighting as a lightweight early on, he could have made 140lbs especially in Floyd's day.
