Roy Jones Jr vs David Tua - How Tua lost out on $42 million Boxing Pay Day
By Johnny Benz (Oct 10, 2009) DoghouseBoxing
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to an exclusive report out by Neil Reid for New Zealand's Sunday News, David Tua was set to land a fight with Roy Jones Jr., before legal issues with his former management team sidetracked the fight.

According to Reid's report, back in 2003 Tua was in serious negotiations to fight Jones Jr. Fight negotiaotions were in the works but ended when Tua became tangled in legal issues with Kevin Barry and Martin Pugh (Tua's former management team).

Reid further reports that David Tua was set to pocket a whopping $42 million to fight Roy Jones Jr.

Tua's legal case against his former management team is still playing out in New Zealand high court.

Totally diagee. ITs like pretending Byrd had as good a power as Tua, and thats simply not the case. Tua has incredible power in both hands. Roy got hit by Ruiz (not often) so he would get hit by Tua. How would he react? Well, Tarver KTFO of ROy and so did Glen Johnson so I don't think it is a realm of impossibility.

Damn good one Smel.

Roy by UD but really shit i dont know. If Tua got him in trouble at all its over.

I agree with Double-D. I really could see a case for either man. Not sure who I'd favour. It's a ridiculously hazardous fight for Jones, but Tua was God-awful at catching slippery opposition.

He isn't pretending anything, Byrd shut Tua out. If David lands a hook he most certainly could starch roy. I don't see him hitting the Roy that fought Ruiz.

Ya know, damn I wish Roy had abandoned lt.heavy and just went for the hw gold and glory, would have finally given him the challeneges he was desperately seeking back in the day. sUbsequently, if cruiser had been 200lbs limit when roy was in charge of 175, i say he owns that division for as long as he wants.

^^^That could have triggered a return bout between Jones & Toney --- at Cruiser.

I say Toney wins at 200lbs.

Tua just always looked extremely inept against Boxers. Rahman, oquendo, Lewis & Byrd all had their way with him for long stretches. he did catch Oquendo and win on a foul against rahman. But if those guys movement gave him so much trouble, hard to see him finding roy. One thing in his favor is that Jones doesn't jab much, while Rahman & lewis tortured him with their sticks.

I'm not sure I get that Byrd as good power as Tua thing. Roy had a little pop at heavy. Probably as much as Byrd, and he did indeed use his jab (which is an amazing tool of his that he neglected against low level comp) against Ruiz, so he'd definitely use it against Tua. Like others have said, David looked terrible against about every mobile boxer he fought, and none were as slick or mobile as Roy.

Of course Tua has the power to stop Roy at any time. The fun of watching Jones-Ruiz was knowing what a razor's edge Roy was walking. It'd be even finer against Tua, but I still don't think he connects. And this may sound crazy, but I think Roy could hurt Tua to the body.

Well, even if Jones could hurt Tua (which I'm not convinced of), he'd never risk trying it --- especially to the body, where he'd need to get close. I think Tua's chances would be roughyl as good as Jones', here. It's a very risky proposition for both men.

RJJ 120-108. Too quick and too slick.

But if Tua so much as touches him, it's lights out.
AndrewP
The Jones that existed before he dropped back down to 175 beats Tua 120-108. Tua misses him a few times in the first couple of rounds, then just fights half speed until the final bell. Then he eats everything in Las Vegas for the next six months.

Fun fight though. It would have had a strong danger element to it.

Hard to believe Tua would have earned "$42 million" though.
Dangerdog
42 seems a might bit inflated i agree. Thats more than LL made against Tyson if im not mistaken.
