P-Will got me thinking in another topic, who would you place, if asked to compile a list of Boxing's ten greatest fighters for all-time?
Of course, this is as subjective --- &, potentially, as interesting --- as Boxing hypotheticals get. To encourage response, I don't have a problem with people offering minimal reasoning for their listings. It would be nice, of course, to colour your list in at least a little, but it can quickly become time-consuming. Just have a think about it (obviously, this isn't a composition one can build off the top of their head) & jot 'em down. To make it a little easier, your list doesn't have to be placed in order --- if you so wish, just name the ten best, period.
I have a fairly solid idea of mine, but will piece it together a bit over the next few hours.

Shouldn't this thread be under general discussion forum?

Perhaps. I guess I'm just used to utilising this one sub-forum. I suppose if it needs to be moved, it can be --- just was looking for the views of the members here, who I'm more familiar with.

1. Sugar Ray Robinson- 6 World Titles. What he did as a Welterweight is the main reason. Then icing on the cake everything he was able to accomplish at Middleweight after the age of 30. The names on his resume are frightening.
2. Ezzard Charles- Won the Heavyweight Championship but was probably the greatest Lightheavy that ever live. Also won some fights at Middleweight. Beat guys like Burley, Bivens, Knocked out Archie Moore 3 times in his prime. Nuff said.
3.Willie Pep- Dominated the Feathers like nobody else. Won more fights than anybody ever could dream.
4. Muhammad Ali- Beat Liston, Frazier, Quarry, Foreman and "Norton" well he beat Norton at once. Won heavyweight title 3 times. Dominated prelayoff about as much as anyone ever did.
5. Roberto Duran- Greatest Lightweight, very good Welterweight and had enough smarts to win the Middleweight title.
6. Joe Louis- 12 Years 25 defenses. I dont care if they were against girls he did what nobody else did.
7. Harry Greb- No video but he has to be accounted for because he won alot. Beat Tunney, Walker, Wilson.
8. Henry Armstrong- 3 Titles at the same time. Force of nature.
9. Archie Moore- Great man, just as great a boxer. More knockouts than any man in history.
10. Joe Frazier- Because Im a nuthugger.

Greatest, to me, is completely different from P4P. It's almost entirely about accomplishment. In which case mine goes something like this I guess:
1. Henry Armstrong
2. Sugar Ray Robinson
3. Willie Pep
4. Roberto Duran
5. Ezzard Charles
6. Harry Greb
7. Benny Leonard
8. Joe Louis
9. Jimmy McLarnin
10. Archie Moore
Subject to whatever whims I'm feeling at the time. Canzoneri and Ray Leonard should probably be on there. P4P greatest would be very different. More interesting to me is who everyone's favorite fighters are. A top 5-10 tells you something, but a top 20 tells a lot more IMO. Don't know that I've seen a thread like that.

You can't really go wrong with any ordering of Robinson, Pep and Armstrong. Any one of those guys could be #1.
As for the rest, I'd have:
4) Ezzard Charles - he's my personal favorite of all time. I've got some early footage from his LHW days and early HW fights and he had it all. Technique, speed, power and killer instinct. While he only held the HW title he probably could have won titles at MW and LHW if he had gotten a shot and had he not been in the military during WWII. His chin could be shaky at times however.
5) Duran - the man.
6) Langford - I generally don't rate fighters that I haven't seen much film of like Langford, but it's hard not to put him at least at #6 given the fact that he knocked mutherfuckers out from Lightweight to HW.
7) Ali
8) Ray Leonard
9) Joe Louis
10) Michael Spinks/Pernell Whitaker (I have a hard time picking between these two)

7.Harry Greb
8.Carlos Monzon

Probably changes by the day and realistically there's probably 10 guys who could potentially occupy a spot on here. I can see 2-5 in any posistion and likewise 6-10.

Monzon was certainly one of the greats, but I think you have him a little too high, as is Greb.
