Full Version: Shane Mosley vs Kid Gavilan

Two guys with speed who could box but often chose to brawl. Both with strong chins. Id give Mosley a slight edge in power but Gavilan an edge in volume and overall offensive output.

Note....Mosley was at his best as a lightweight but was still a very good 147lber.

If they fought it would have been the lightweight Shane (who weighed 148 in the ring) and I really love this fight. Flip a coin.

This fight would have been made like 7 times back in the day, and I think they split, with perhaps one late, ref-induced stoppage each and a draw. Brutal fights ETM. I can't pick, honestly, especially considering if it is the Shane Prod described.

Whenever you match Shane up with old time welters, you have to assume it's the lightweight version we saw, but perhaps even stronger because he wouldn't have to kill himself to make weight. That Mosley was a real welterweight if we're talking same-day weigh-ins.

Yeah except he is going to be hitting Welterweights instead of lightweights.

Right. He'll also be hitting the toughest guy ever.

As far as energy, chin, willingness to mix it up... they'd probably just take turns hitting each other.

I'd give Keed a very small edge in this match-up because of his experience.

Ive never seen anyone throw more punches than Gavilan. He chucks some serious leather. I think he had a little more power than his record indicated though Id still give Mosley the edge punch for punch. The Keed did have some late knockouts even coming from behind a few times.

I think Gavilan may be the most "underated" alltime great or at least underappreciated.

You can easily make a case for him as the #2 welter ever. Many would put Leonard there, but look at their records and tell me who really proved more. No-brainer.
Sex Machine
He is at least top 5 or 6 of alltime in the Welterweight IMO. Beating guys like Basillio and Turner in their hometowns is nothing to sneeze at. Leonard might beat him head to head but that is also far from a foregone conclusion. Same thing with Hearns.
