Full Version: Your Take On The Welter Debate...
MaxBoxing.com Forums > Boxing > Mythical Matchup
The Sly Fox
How about settling this long-standing chestnut between a few friends I have (I've never chimed in on this one, but, as Boxing arguments go, this is one of their old chestnuts)...

Which decade produced the richest era for Welterweight champions?

Here's a listing so those of you willing to offer your two cents can decide. Basic premise is determining the quality of the champions produced in any given ten-year span.

2000's:

Antonio Margarito (2008-09)
Miguel Cotto (2008)
Floyd Mayweather (2006-07)
Carlos Baldomir (2006)
Zab Judah (2004-06)
Cory Spinks (2003-04)
Ricardo Mayorga (2003)
Vernon Forrest (2002-03)
Shane Mosley (2000-02, 09-Present)
Oscar De La Hoya (2000)
Felix Trinidad (2000)

1990's:

Felix Trinidad (1999)
Oscar De La Hoya (1997-99)
Pernell Whitaker (1993-97)
Buddy McGirt (1991-93)
Simon Brown (1991)
Maurice Blocker (1990-91)
Marlon Starling (1990)

from the late 90's you left out
Oba Carr
Quartey

Talent wise i think the late 90's fighters (i include Mosley in that) were superior in talent than the current fighters. However, i think that the late 90's and early 2000's fighters are basically the same generation. so a fair comparison would have been

2000's:

Antonio Margarito
Miguel Cotto
Floyd Mayweather
Carlos Baldomir
Zab Judah
Cory Spinks
Ricardo Mayorga

Vernon Forrest
Shane Mosley
Oscar De La Hoya
Felix Trinidad
Quartey
Oba Carr
Sweet Pea

i think the late 90's early 2000's are superior. Both in talent and star power. Even the faded version of sweet pea would have clowned Mayorga, Baldomir and Zab.
Trinidad would have killed any of the welters from the late 2000's except maybe PBF.
Same with Mosley, Vernon and DLH. Quartey would have probably beaten everybody except PBF and Margarito.

I got the 90's

That's two great lineups right there. I think the 90's dudes were better, but maybe the better fights where the one's between this decades guys?
