Some consider this a mismatch (in either direction), others, a competitive fight.

How do you see it over fifteen rounds?
PWillIsGod
Jones by wide decision, the athletic difference is just too much for Gene to overcome. He would feel like he was fighting a ghost.
Smelodies
Jones knows where the neutral corner is located.

Post-Montel Griffin Jones, anyway.

jones tko 11.....tunney wouldnt be able to touch jones...

There's not a fighter in history between 168 & 190lbs. Gene Tunney, "couldn't touch," IMO. Not a one.

Agreed. This would be a fantastic fight. Tunney could crack at 75 and had an excellent jab. His chin was fabulous too. Never thought about it but I like it.

Fair to say Tunney's a lot more proven as a fighter than Jones. I'm not saying Tunney wins hands-down, or anything so silly --- but it is, for mine, equally-absurd to consider Jones a lock in this one.

Beating Greb, Gibbons, Carpentier, Dempsey & co. puts one in good stead to face any kind of adversary.

If it is 15 rounds Jones loses. I seriously seriously think Tunney would gameplan the shit out of Roy and though he isn't a southpaw he would stymie him the way Montel Griffin did in their first fight by forcing Roy to lead and Tunney was a patient fighter who could get you completely out of your gameplan.

In short, I pick science over athletic ability and Tunney was pure science.

Good post. Tunny was very smart and had a good skills set. Pretty good height and his hands were not as fast as Roy`s but he wasnt slow. A nice jab and nice combos behind it.

Id still take Jones but probably would be a competitive fight.

ya'll mustve forgot..........

I think, in the end, I would just hope Jones'd take Tunney as seriously, & plan as meticulously for him, as Tunney would Jones.

No basketball shoot-outs prior to this one, if Jones knows what he's up against. I really would love to see if Tunney could piece him together after a slow start coming to grips with Jones' freakish abilities early on, which is what I would think to happen. Tunney was beautiful like that. He could hurt Jones, too, as even Dempsey admitted to being wounded by his under-rated punch on one occasion in particular (not the knockdown).

I agree that fifteen rounds suits Tunney moreso than twelve. Can't see Jones winning the bulk of the late rounds, though --- I question his intestinal fortitude for it against a ring legend like Tunney, frankly. He'd have to put all those early rounds in the bank for a decision.

I haven't seen enough of Tunney to know how this would play out. I am pretty sure that he wouldn't just let Jones do his usual stick and move routine. I think he'd force Jones to fight in spots. The question is how he deals with Jones' speed. I just haven't seen enough tape of Tunney to judge that one. But he was so successful over the course of his career I have a hard time thinking this would be easy for Jones.
