Full Version: Paying for PPV Boxing. Is the public getting ripped off?

Last week, 1.25 million people shelled out 54.95 each to watch an old, washed up fighter "No Mas" it inside of the ropes. We were all subject to the television commercials known as "HBO 24/7" in the weeks leading to the fight. I, for one, REFUSED to pay 8 cents for that crap, as after watching virtual unknown Steve Forbes bruise de la Hoya and last the distance, I knew what was going to happen. And it did, nearly exactly as I predicted, although I thought it would be a UD or an SD, I didnt dream that Oscar, for 50 million would quit.

Anyway, earlier this year, I got ahold of some jack ass CEO for Time Warner, and asked him who the fuck made the decision as to what fights had PPV status, as I was OUTRAGED that I was going to get charged to watch a Joel Casamayor fight. He essentially told me that as a fan, it was "none of my business" as to who made the final decisions, and what fights were deemed "PPV worthy"....if the fights made profit, it would continue to happen. Fine and well, as I felt vindicated after reading the other day on Fightnews, a newspaper article about Richard Schaefer, and he was crying and moaning about the piss poor PPV sales of Driving Miss Daisy and Kelly Pavlik last time out, another bullshit fight I didnt pay for. This was another NON TITLE, washed up fighter event, that was too easily a WCB fight. It seems to me, that hopefully, THIS YEAR we wont get raped as hard by GGP and HBOPPV if we start refusing to shell out $$$$ for shit fights, like the one last week. I wont even MENTION the boring ass CRAPOLA undercards that Golden Boy Promotions is starting to get notorious for on their PPV Events.

Thoughts, comments, Maxboxingites?

The executive was right; if you were outraged to be asked to pay for a Casa fight, then don't pay for it and skip the fight. If fans start skipping PPVs that suck or look like they will (which Casa-JMM did) then they will stop...then fans can bitch that fights like that are taking up too many spots on HBO and we aren't seeing enough guys like Angulo because there are still limited dates where many fans think they come iun some limitless box of Lucky Charms.

It's true, it might be "none of my business" that GGP and HBOPPV are going to continue to rip off the public, any chance they get, to make themselves more rich. BUT. I am not your average fan. Any chance I get, whether it be these boards, or an Article in the Editorial Section of the USA Today, I will continue to remind the Sports Fans and the Boxing Public that the CEO's of HBO and GGP are ripping the public off, by charging PPV $$$s for non PPV Status fights.

If 1.25 million people plunk down $50 for a fight, I'd say that qualifies as ppv status

If 1.25 million Oscarsexuals plunk down $50 for a fight, I'd say they would rather go to the Staples Center to worship and light candles in front of the new statue there, than go to Church on Sunday.
