Its not like Ole Miss is this good a running team, they're just up against a horrible defense.

I don't even like that chant usually, seems like it takes away from a win, but it was perfect for today. If people saw Ole Miss late in the year, or even early against Florida and Alabama, then this wouldn't be much of a surprise. They will be a handful next year too.
I will enjoy Oklahoma getting hammered too. I've got Texas to win, fairly confident about that. The extra practices can only help Pryor but I still don't think he's quite there yet. Plus I think Texas is the best the Big 12 has to offer, they at least play a little D.
A great day so far.

I was incredably disappointed when they didnt put Utah vs Texas. That would be a fucking ball of a game. Utah put up 31 on 'Bamas defense, one of the best in the nation, and sport one of the best defenses in the nation themselves.
This season solved NOTHING at the end of it all. At the end of it all you will have Utah, USC, Texas and Florida/Oklahoma... How can you legitimately say one is better than the other at this point?

So is Turner Gill still the college football coaching messiah?
I guess I couldn't understand how Ball State completely throwing away a big game meant that Turner Gill was the greatest coach out there now. He's certainly a good one with a bad program, but not an elite one.
PWillIsGod
Jan 3 2009, 11:20 AM
And why is that? He completely turned around a garbage program. I imagine you would have been saying the same shit about Jim Tressell.

I agree, he has done a great job with a bad program. But seriously, they went 8-6, won a bad conference and lost in a minor bowl game. I just keep reading Turner Gill's name in every article I read about coaching changes and I keep remembering that no one heard of him until Ball State just self-destructed and gave them the conference. I don't understand how that game made him such an elite coach.
And I think Jim Tressel is a douche and an overrated coach, so I'd say Gill has him beat, since he is only the latter.

Jim is one of the best coaches in the country. Overrated is hilarious. You should be hearing about Turner Gill in every opening. He is a bright young coach that learned from the master.
He went 8-6 with a team that usually wins 3 games and won the conference he coaches in. Turning around the program is what has his name out there. And you wont know if he is elite until given the opportunity.

I don't see how Utah can be denied at least a share of the National Championship after this performance.
Utah's up tempo spread had Bama's defense practically tripping over themselves the entire first half. The Utes were also the much more physical team defensively, which surprised me.

Tressel walked into a great program in the right conference to do well and Ohio State has gotten a lot of breaks over the years because of it's status. Like getting an invitation to the Fiesta Bowl this year for instance. They won one national championship and that was due to lucky breaks in that game and no need to speak of the others.
And once again, I said he is a good coach, but I don't think that he suddenly became good because Ball State sucked so bad in that game.

Oklahoma and Texas are actually very strong teams. Both national contenders IMO. They dont boast the strongest of defenses, but they are decent overall. Their offenses are amazing sights to behold, and while they might be able to be slowed, they wont be able to be contained by anyone... I think Florida can win a shoot-out with Oklahoma (but it will be close), but I say Texas rolls over Ohio St ala USC-style.

That program wasn't anywhere near it is now when john Cooper was there. Tressel won 4 championchips at youngstown and played in 6 during 13 years. Won 1 and played in 3 during 8 years at Ohio St.
He has beaten Michigan 7 times in 8 tries. The guys numbers are astronomical. I have never seen him outcoached. I've seen his teams lose to better teams.
In 13 years John Cooper had double digit victories 3 times. The two years before Tressel got there they were 6-6 & 8-4.

LOL at the "breaks". Ohio State won the title game over Miami fair and square. Go back and watch that game and check all of the holding that Miami got away with. Only when the refs HAD to make a call did they finally acknowledge that Miami was holding.
I acknowledge that Florida and LSU kicked our ass the last two years. Tressel handled the losses with class, he's 83-18 in 8 years and has a winning bowl record and owns his team's archrival. Compare that to Cooper and tell me again that he's overrated. Stoned.

Agree Mark; in lieu of it, I hold out hope the AP will do the right thing and split the national title with a nod to Utah if, for no other reason, than to thumb the BCS. This isn't the Hawaii or even Boise team. This team played a real schedule in what, this year, was a serious conference. It was inexcusable that they were rated behind a 1-loss USC team given the Oregon State difference between the two. No major conference team with wins over multiple ranked teams would have suffered a similar insult.
