220 square miles of Antarctica ice breaks off. Ice shelf the size of Connecticut is also about to collapse.

i'm about 50/50 on the global warming issue. part of me believes that we are changing the world in a bad way.....the other part of me believes the scientists that say we are on the tail end of an ice age, which if thats true, there's nothing we could do about it.

Mars' carbon dioxide ice caps have been melting at the same time. It's probably the sun. I read somewhere (nat'l geographic maybe) that Pluto was actually warming as well, while moving farther away from the sun in it's orbit. And Jupiter, other bodies/moons too.

Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren’t quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. (Lies. Hud) But Josh Willis at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when it comes to global warming.

In fact, 80 percent to 90 percent of global warming involves heating up ocean waters. They hold much more heat than the atmosphere can. So Willis has been studying the ocean with a fleet of robotic instruments called the Argo system. The buoys can dive 3,000 feet down and measure ocean temperature. Since the system was fully deployed in 2003, it has recorded no warming of the global oceans.

This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years
since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. But Josh Willis at
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when
it comes to global warming.

In fact, 80 percent to 90 percent of global warming involves heating up
ocean waters. They hold much more heat than the atmosphere can. So Willis
has been studying the ocean with a fleet of robotic instruments called the
Argo system. The buoys can dive 3,000 feet down and measure ocean
temperature. Since the system was fully deployed in 2003, it has recorded no
warming of the global oceans.

"There has been a very slight cooling, but not anything really significant,"
Willis says. So the buildup of heat on Earth may be on a brief hiatus.
"Global warming doesn't mean every year will be warmer than the last. And it
may be that we are in a period of less rapid warming."

In recent years, heat has actually been flowing out of the ocean and into
the air. This is a feature of the weather phenomenon known as El Nino. So it
is indeed possible the air has warmed but the ocean has not. But it's also
possible that something more mysterious is going on.

That becomes clear when you consider what's happening to global sea level.
Sea level rises when the oceans get warm because warmer water expands. This
accounts for about half of global sea level rise. So with the oceans not
warming, you would expect to see less sea level rise. Instead, sea level has
risen about half an inch in the past four years. That's a lot.

Willis says some of this water is apparently coming from a recent increase
in the melting rate of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica.

"But in fact there's a little bit of a mystery. We can't account for all of
the sea level increase we've seen over the last three or four years," he
says.

One possibility is that the sea has, in fact, warmed and expanded - and
scientists are somehow misinterpreting the data from the diving buoys.

But if the aquatic robots are actually telling the right story, that raises
a new question: Where is the extra heat all going?

Kevin Trenberth at the National Center for Atmospheric Research says it's
probably going back out into space. The Earth has a number of natural
thermostats, including clouds, which can either trap heat and turn up the
temperature, or reflect sunlight and help cool the planet.

That can't be directly measured at the moment, however.

"Unfortunately, we don't have adequate tracking of clouds to determine
exactly what role they've been playing during this period," Trenberth says.

It's also possible that some of the heat has gone even deeper into the
ocean, he says. Or it's possible that scientists need to correct for some
other feature of the planet they don't know about. It's an exciting time,
though, with all this new data about global sea temperature, sea level and
other features of climate.

"I suspect that we'll able to put this together with a little bit more
perspective and further analysis," Trenberth says. "But what this does is
highlight some of the issues and send people back to the drawing board."

Trenberth and Willis agree that a few mild years have no effect on the
long-term trend of global warming. But they say there are still things to
learn about how our planet copes with the heat.

Of course there is questions? Most of the data is towards the obvious but there is discourse. I like that but not -NPR (runaway) But as I said before, words are for adults. I can show you pictures or hand puppets.

why does this piss you off so much man? for the thousands of articles out there that support the global warming theory, there are just as many that disprove it. if it doesn't exist, then people are worried about nothing. if it does exist, people as a whole are too ignorant to do anything to stop it anyway, no matter how many rallies are held or movies are released or articles are published.

even if the world is warming, it's beyond our spectre of control anyway. we're going to do something to blink ourselves out of existence long before global warming does it for us anyway. if you have so little faith in mankind, as your first post tells me (and i completely agree), then you cant deny that we're going to nuke ourselves into extinction long before we drown ourselves. you're right, we're humans and we fuck things up.

in the 70's people were in a huge uproar because the earth was cooling down, and that would be our end. fast forward 30 years and Y2K will end the world. now 10 years later there's global warming. there's been too many theories about how the world will end for me to just believe what the media has to say about global warming. i'm not saying i dont believe that it could be true, i'm saying it will take more than al gore and cnn to make me believe it.

Well, the newest theory is that the sun is entering a period of much less activity as evidenced by the lack of sunspots that we'd normally expect to see. Such periods are typically correlated with what we call ice ages, or minor ice ages.

If that's true, our fuck-up may ironically be our savior. If we've depleted the ozone to let too much sun in and caused a greenhouse effect to also keep too much sun in, these two things may be just in time to offset the effects of a sun not putting out quite as much.

Think of it as a guy who learns to love masturbation at the exact moment he gets married. It's ironic and obviously not planned but it may be a life-saver when his wife tightens up on that ass like she's the fed fighting inflation.

I think there was documented proof. The response was something about increased wind storms on mars kicking sediment into the atmosphere causing the warming, or some other local phenomena.

Isnt that what supposedly caused the 'Little Ice Age' a couple centuries ago - decades of little sunspot activity?

thumbsup.gif A winnar is you.

Also to be considered from an unemotional pov...whether or not it is true means little; the public is rallying behind it and pushing for reforms. This will be extraordinarily lucrative for whomever wants to make buckets of money. Money knows no political affiliation. Why fight what can and will make billionaires? If ya can't beat 'em, exploit 'em. I invest where I am most likely to make money, and particularly on the ground floor.

First off it's not "why does THIS piss me off?" IT doesn't. The fact that half an article was posted in a "say something to prove some point" without the whole article is typical run and gun bullshit that Nameless does.

I am fine with argument for and against. I am not for bullshit posts where one posters says something outlandish and run's away. I have many examples.

Are you nuts? That’s usually the worst time for a guy to learn to love masturbation. Typically newlyweds fuck every day for about a year or so before she starts using the vag as a bargaining chip. THAT would be the perfect time to learn loving masturbation.

The thing i find funny with Al Gore is he does not practice what he preaches. How do you go out and tell the world we need to stop "doing this and that" when he himself wont. And then he goes on about carbon credits, and how he buys them to make up for his extraordinary personal energy usage. But he doesnt mention, he is the ceo of the company he buys them from. http://www.canadafreepress.com/2007/cover031307.htm

But, like was earlier posted, it doesnt hurt to cut down.
