I agree about Bale not being in a bad movie. One movie of his I never finished watching was The Machinist. I still dont' know how he got his body to look like that. Looked like he weighed 88 lbs.

Don't finish it. He did a great job in the movie, but fuck if it's not horrible. It's sort of a Fight Club ripoff, and nothing interesting happens.

I'll take your word for it. It did seem like it was heading in the direction (Fight club ripoff) when i stopped watching it.
dapperdon
Machinist was a big let down. I figured if he lost all that weight for a role, it must have been a great script. But yeah, nothing happens. The director of that movie did a really good horror flick called Session 9, so needless to say big disappointment.

I watched a documentary-style flick the other night on Showtime On Demand called "America's Drug War" or something along those lines.

Not bad actually.

I enjoyed that myself, largely I think becuase I already share most of the same sentiment. I think it may be too forwardly radical and condescending to conservative types to actually sway anybody though.

Still say Traffic is required viewing for young and old in modern America.

Just caught up on a few pages of this thread.

1. Apocalypse Now is great. Excellent flick. Colonel Kilgore is awesome.

2. I watched "I Think I Love My Wife" yesterday. It is the only movie I can think of rated R with no sex, nudity, or violence. And it wasn't funny on top of all that. It did however make me have about an hour long crush on Kerry Washington.

I watched "I Think I Love My Wife" Saturday night too, text E and told him to check out Kerry Washington and for about an hour and a half we were like "omg" "damn shes fine" "top 10" "ill drink her bathwater" "ill drink her pee" (E said that one laugh.gif), some parts were funny but that singing shit at the end with Chris Rock and his wife was dumb.

Went and saw Priceless (Hors De Prix) yesterday. Nobody can make a movie as charming as the French. Audrey Tautou is a goddess, she was already in my top three but she was so fucking sexy in this film I almost tugged it in the theater. She's been hyped as the new Audrey Hepburn for a couple years now but this role really showed it.

Both were dope. icon14.gif icon14.gif

Yuma was really good until the last 10 minutes of absurd garbage. Kind of like Fight Club. It would have been better if he just smashed dude's face in.

Dude clearly didn't do a great job of being "objective," but I think that was also part of his point throughout the movie - that he witnessed (and experienced) the effects of legal and illegal drugs, and was speaking from THAT standpoint. It annoyed me a bit in parts, but overall I thought the guy did a very good job of tying a lot of really complex and controversial issues together. Privatization of pharmaceuticals, privatization of the prison system, drug prosecution, drug legality/illegality, etc. I think he might've delved a tad too deep with the "basically everything our government does is bullshit" overtones though.

EVERYBODY SHOULD SEE THE DOCUMENTARY HOOK'D

It's about Hook Mitchell, Oakland playgroud legend who pissed away his basketball talents and spent time in prison for trying to knock off a Blockbuster video store.

It's a truly great movie. I plan to show it to the bad ass kids in our alternative school program this Friday.

Saw 21 and Grindhouse's Death Proof.

21 was actually pretty good, somewhat predictable but still entertaining. Kate Bosworth can get it bad. overall i was happy with my choice in movie.

Finally saw Grindhouse but only Quentin's movie (gotta see Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror next). I actually really liked it. If its one thing I can appreciate is good dialogue and Quentin is a master of that. Been a Tarantino fan for as long as I can remember and the car chase stunts were unreal. going to watch Robert Rodriguez's later.

I thought Grindhouse well the one about the car sucked. Planet Terror was cool as hell.

Platoon was on encore today and I forget how good that was. Berrenger was a BAD ASS in that movie.

Decided to pop this in since I haven't watched it in a few years.

Loved this movie growing up. Cheesy 80s teen flick. James Spader, Robert Downey Jr, HOT ASS Kim Richards, and a soundtrack dominated by Jim Carroll = good times.

Cosign on the 1st.

On the 2nd, I actually liked that part because it wasn't your typical 'the killer cannot be killed' bullshit. I am also aroused by women who own their own guns so all those stunt bitches could get it!

A lot of people really don't like Platoon for some reason. I remember watching it at a pretty young age in the theater, and clearly I didn't "get it" when I was a kid, but ever since I was about 16 or so, it's been one of my favorites. Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe made that flick, along with some outstanding performances by fringe-type actors. Great movie though.

Re: Bale.

His performances are always top notch. I liked the Machinist but it was really about Bale's performance than the script and the movie itself. I didn't like Harsh Times but again, his performance made it worth the 2 hours. Never saw Reign of Fire. Next time I catch it on cable, I'll give it a look.

I'm thinking about renting Ocean's 13 since I haven't seen it. Is it better than 12?

30 days of Night- good flick really liked the creepiness of it.

In the Valley of Elah- awesome flick. TL Jones is such a great actor.

I saw the Ruin and Shine a Light the past few days.

Any Stones fan/Scorsese fan should see SAL. Best concert movie you'll ever see, I think it's only playing on IMAX screens and full advantage is taken of the added dimensions. Captures the greatest band of all-time in excellent form.

The Ruins was unpleasant, but fairly effective. It kept my attention throughout. Fairly original idea. Don't want to spoil it for anyone. It had some decent scares, but requires some suspension of disbelief.

I've been wanting to see this, but I'm just so reluctant to go see just about ANYTHING in the theaters these days. And considering I get free movie passes all the time, that's saying something about how shitty movies have been recently.

Not sure if I'd go ahead and give this movie a full endorsement. If you're not a horror film fan, I'd say skip it until it's on cable. If you want to see a bloodfest set in an interesting location where people are put in a really shitty situation and see how they react, check it out (although some of their behavior is stupid). If you had liked the Descent, I might be a little more willing to tell you to see this (can't remember what you didn't like about that movie).

Well, to answer both...

I'm not a hardcore horror fan, but I don't really DISlike the genre either I guess. When it's good, it's great. But when it's bad, it's fucking terrible.

As for The Descent, I thought it was pretty decent until the end. The ending just KILLED it for me. First they start doing some Jackie Chan shit to these crazy monsters, and then you find out it was all just a dream. The whole "it was all a dream" thing is really played out. As I've said before though, I thought they did a very good job at creating a really claustrophobic type of feeling throughout the movie. I just thought the ending was horrible.

Ilian wants to see it too, so we might check it out.

But if I don't like it, it's your fault.

I actually think Cannibal Holocaust along with Last House on the Left are def two of the best "underground" films ever made and two favorites. I watched a "homage" to it or "ripoff" depending on how you look at it called Welcome to the Jungle which I thought was decent. Saw the Mist this weekend which I thought was excellent esp the fucked up ending.

I will have to check out Ruin, I've been meaning to read the book as well.

I can definitely understand why someone would like Cannibal Holocaust. It's just a very unpleasant movie even though it has some depth below all the gore. Not really a good time scary movie. Last House on the Left is probably my favorite Wes Craven movie. The music hasn't aged well, but overall it's still a potent movie.
