I don't know who wins this mythical matchup. I will say that Hagler was past his prime when Mugabi had challenged him years later. Vargas was not as big or as strong as Hagler in his prime, nor did he possess the same amount of power as he did; But he was a lot faster and elusive than Hagler was.

Vargas' machismo could very well be his undoing against Mugabi. I would only say, if we're talking about pre-Hagler/Mugabi here, then I lean towards Mugabi. If we're talking about post-Hagler/Mugabi, then I lean towards Vargas, because that fight permanently ruined Mugabi. He was never the same after that bout with Hagler.

Hagler might have slowed down a pinch but his chin was in prime form that night. Thats really what won the bout for him. Im sure Mugabi shit a little when he landed those bombs and Marvin didnt flinch. Especially that uppercut that shouldve ended the evening.

If Vargas was more elusive Id give him a solid chance to outbox Mugabi.

I agree, it was Hagler's chin that won him that fight. In addition, if one can recall, Vargas was largely a swarmer/pressure fighter before Trinidad had exposed him and this would have played right into Mugabi's strengths. If I had to choose between Mugabi and Vargas at their peaks, then I would have to choose Mugabi.
