Tough fight, both guys can be hurt. Who ya like?

Mugabi pre Hagler at 154 i presume, and Vargas before getting cracked by Tito.

Tough call.

Vargas by late TKo. HE had the ability to box too; which is somthing people seem to forget. It would be similar to Campas except VArgas wont get the tko till late in the 11th or 12. ... what a afight though huh, Vargas 20-0 with 18 ko's and the beast 25-0 with 25 ko's.

Mugabi by decapitation. The shots he hit Hagler with would find Fernando`s head too. Nuff said.

Vargas was a solid boxer/puncher back in the days. Not great defensively obviously, but he had wheels when he wanted. He was also very patient and accurate. He hit hard too. He is too sharp for Mugabi and I have more faith in his toughness and determination than I do in Mugabi's. He wanted out after about 6 or 7 with Hagler. Vargas never gives up. He wins this.

Pretty big difference between Hagler and Vargas though. I didnt see Mugabi give until late in the fight. I think he hits too hard for El Fagoz.

I don't think I compared Vargas to Hagler. And I don't even like Vargas at all.

Im just saying that if that version of Mugabi who came to battle Marvin Hagler showed up I dont think Vargas survives. He was determined and he hit Hagler with shots that would have killed Vargas. I dont think Vargas was in there with the same kind of talent with Tito.

He was determined for a half a fight. As soon as he learned that Hagler was gonna just fall to the ground like everyone else he ever fought, he wanted out. Look at him in the corner. His people were pushing him out there.

Vargas has been in there and competed with guys who were beyond Mugabi.

Vargas will hit him more than John hits him. If it comes down to heart, I got Fernando.

Of course Mugabi could hurt him at any point, but he will have to walk though some heat himself. And Vargas hit pretty damn hard himself.

Vargas is more proven and I see him as the more consistent guy in the ring with the better skillset.

I gotta go with Mugabi.

MM is all about best for best.

the best Vargas i ever saw couldnt eat the shots that Mugabi would land.

I'm with ETM, it wasn't until a few rounds later that Mugabi's head began to drop. And he was eating hard shots and his own hard shots were having no effect. I can't see him having the same lack of success bouncing shots of Vargas, and I can't comfortably bracket Vargas's punch resistance in the same league as Hagler's.

I'd put a fair bit of cash on Mugabi to do a number on Vargas.

I don't know who wins this mythical matchup. I will say that Hagler was past his prime when Mugabi had challenged him years later. Vargas was not as big or as strong as Hagler in his prime, nor did he possess the same amount of power as he did; But he was a lot faster and elusive than Hagler was.

Vargas' machismo could very well be his undoing against Mugabi. I would only say, if we're talking about pre-Hagler/Mugabi here, then I lean towards Mugabi. If we're talking about post-Hagler/Mugabi, then I lean towards Vargas, because that fight permanently ruined Mugabi. He was never the same after that bout with Hagler.

Hagler might have slowed down a pinch but his chin was in prime form that night. Thats really what won the bout for him. Im sure Mugabi shit a little when he landed those bombs and Marvin didnt flinch. Especially that uppercut that shouldve ended the evening.

If Vargas was more elusive Id give him a solid chance to outbox Mugabi.

I agree, it was Hagler's chin that won him that fight. In addition, if one can recall, Vargas was largely a swarmer/pressure fighter before Trinidad had exposed him and this would have played right into Mugabi's strengths. If I had to choose between Mugabi and Vargas at their peaks, then I would have to choose Mugabi.

Vargas was never elusive.

He could fold the post Hagler version of Mugabi in half, but pre Hags Mugabi puts him on his back.
